memoirs vs. personal essay

Altough I was absent from class on Wed the 31st, I was doing some thinking on the differences between memoirs and personal essay. I think the 2 differ in a few ways. I feel memoirs display more of an actual account and reenactment of a situation, while a personal essay can be such a thing, but also must have more of an opinionated point of view. Some dictionaries define memoirs strictly as an "aoutobiography", which i guess is a pretty accurate definition. A personal essay, though, I think is vital to understanding the thought process an individual may have, because its more opinionated and more "peronal" so one can become more involved into what the person is thinking.

Personal Essay Brainstorming

Topic:
First Day of Substitute teaching.Introduction: I’ve always enjoyed the idea of teaching. The ability to express one’s knowledge to another and having it absorb, then being able to enjoy the successor’s use of knowledge always has intrigued me.

How was the day attractive to you?
I enjoyed the experience of trying something new. I was put into an environment that I had never previously been involved with.Location:The school was in a more urban district which I had grown up in so was used to certain behaviors of people. This enabled me to have a better understanding of how to deal with certain situations. Overall it was a bit overwhelming, my first couple of times, because now it was myself that was in charge of the classroom procedure.

Anecdotes:
The first day of class there was a fight in the hallways. This was a bit alarming considering that it was now my responsibility to end the confrontation. I had assistance of other teachers and faculty members, but this did put a damper on my otherwise carefree day.

Experience learned.
Through this new route in occupation I learned to deal with new social situations with youths. I was able to apply my disciplinary attributes to real life circumstances. The differences with behaviors expanded my views on different social backgrounds.

What else to include doing this essay:
During this essay I will also speak on personal ideologies of learning. What I would do further as a teacher from this experience. What my previous thoughts were about taking on this new job. What I had done wrong on my first few attempts of substitute teaching. What I learned from these mistakes. How these mistakes will help me in future situations, even if not directly involved with teaching.
